Pictures matter almost as much as words on a gardening site — a good photo of a side yard border or a stair railing planter can explain an idea faster than a paragraph ever could. This page explains where our images come from, how we license or credit them, and what to do if you believe your photograph or artwork appears here without proper permission.

Where Our Images Come From

The Tended Garden uses a mix of the following sources for the photographs and illustrations across our posts:

  • Original photographs taken by our own writers and contributors, of their own gardens, containers, and projects.
  • Stock imagery purchased or licensed through reputable royalty-free and rights-managed stock photo libraries.
  • Images released under Creative Commons or similar open licenses, used strictly according to the terms of that license.
  • Illustrations, diagrams, or mockups created in-house specifically to support a tutorial or design idea.
  • Images supplied by brands, designers, or readers who have given us explicit permission to publish them, often as part of a collaboration.

We do our best to keep records of the license or permission tied to every image we publish. If a specific image on a page is not covered by our own photography or a standard stock license, we aim to note the source or photographer directly near that image or in the post itself.

Attribution Practices

Where a license requires attribution, we credit the photographer, illustrator, or platform as clearly as we reasonably can, either in the image caption or at the end of the relevant article. We try to be consistent, but with hundreds of posts covering topics from flower borders to indoor plant shelves, occasional oversights are possible. If you notice a missing or incorrect credit on any page, we would genuinely like to fix it — please see the contact details further down.

For general context on how we build and fact-check our content (including how visuals support our writing), our editorial policy outlines the standards we hold ourselves to.

Can You Use Our Images?

Unless an image is explicitly marked as free to reuse, please assume that photographs and graphics on this site are protected and not available for republishing, resale, or redistribution without written permission. This includes:

  • Original photos of gardens, planters, and projects created by our team.
  • Custom illustrations, before-and-after diagrams, and design mockups made for The Tended Garden.
  • Any composite images combining our own photography with licensed stock elements.

If you would like to feature one of our images in your own blog post, newsletter, or social media content, reach out first at [email protected] with a link to the specific page and image in question, and we will let you know whether it can be shared and under what conditions (usually a credit and a link back to the original post).

Pinning and Sharing

Many of our images, particularly those built for visual guides like side yard layouts or vertical planting ideas, are designed with saving and pinning in mind. That said, sharing an image through a platform like Pinterest is different from copying it directly onto another website. If you have questions about how our images are meant to be used on visual discovery platforms, our Pinterest disclaimer covers that in more detail.

Third-Party Trademarks and Products

Occasionally our posts feature photos that include branded tools, containers, plant labels, or products. These trademarks and product images remain the property of their respective owners, and their appearance on our site does not imply endorsement in either direction. If you are a brand or rights holder with a concern about how your product appears in one of our images, please contact us and we will review the specific post promptly.

Requesting Credit, Correction, or Removal

We take image rights seriously, even though errors can happen on a site with this much visual content. If you are the rights holder of an image used on The Tended Garden and would like to:

  • Request that we add or correct a photo credit,
  • Ask us to link back to your original source, or
  • Request that an image be removed entirely,

please email us at [email protected] with the exact page URL, a description or screenshot of the image, and proof of ownership where possible (such as the original file, an EXIF record, or a link to where it was first published). We aim to review and respond to genuine claims within a reasonable timeframe and will correct or remove the image promptly once the claim is verified.

How This Fits With Our Other Policies

This Image Credits page works alongside our broader site policies rather than replacing them. Our disclaimer explains the general limits of the information and content we publish, while our Terms of Use cover how the site as a whole may and may not be used. If you are unsure which policy applies to your question, feel free to start with a message through our contact page and we will point you in the right direction.

Finally, if you simply want to learn more about who is behind The Tended Garden and how we approach gardening content in general, our About Us page shares that background. We appreciate every reader, photographer, and fellow gardener who helps us keep this a fair and well-credited space.
